Ազգային ինքնության կազմավորումը բարդ և բազմաբաղադրիչ գործընթաց է: Ժամանակակից հասարակությունում առկա ինքնության բաղադրիչների վերաբերյալ քննարկումները խորապես ընկալելու համար անհրաժեշտ է հայերի ազգային ինքնության կազմավորման վաղ շրջանի վելուծություն: Այս հոդվածի նպատակն է վերլուծել Թիֆլիսում տպագրված «Մշակ» պարբերականում (1872-1892թթ.) հայերի ինքնության ցուցիչների մասին քննարկումները: Հոդվածում ներկայացվում է «Մշակ» պարբերականի հոդվածագիրների և խմբագրի ընկալումը հայ հասարակությունում պարբերականի դերի վերաբերյալ: Այնուհետև ներկայացվում են հայրենիքի և լեզվի հայեցակարգերը, որոնք, ըստ «Մշակ» պարբերականի, հայերի ինքնության հիմնական ցուցիչներն էին: Հոդվածում նաև քննարկվում է ազգային ինքնության ձևավորման գործընթացում կրոնի գործառույթի վերաբերյալ «Մշակ» պարբերականի ընկալումը:
